Lund, Sweden – Following its recent CE marking, Swedish medical technology company Xaga Surgical is now launching the Forsvall Biopsy System, a new type of biopsy needle, on the European market with start in Sweden. The company is already in contact with around 20 clinics interested in evaluating the needle for tissue sampling in prostate cancer diagnostics.
Despite major advances in medical technology, biopsy needles have remained largely unchanged for decades. Xaga Surgical is challenging this with a novel needle design that has the potential to improve both the accuracy and safety of cancer diagnostics, without compromising patient outcomes.
Infection is the most serious and costly complication associated with cancer diagnostic procedures, and according to the company, the new needle can reduce needle-related bacterial infections by more than 90 percent. The needle may also improve tissue sampling by providing a straighter path to the tumour, resulting in more accurate biopsy samples and a better characterisation of tumour properties.
The needle has already been available on the US market for a year, where Xaga Surgical has established a base of recurring customers. The European launch marks the next step in the company’s commercial development, with the needle now being made available for purchase by clinics.
Xaga Surgical has developed and patented a platform of needles for different applications in healthcare, providing a strong foundation for further market launches.
“The CE marking is a major milestone for Xaga Surgical. The Forsvall Biopsy System is already being used clinically in the US, but it is incredibly exciting to now also be able to offer the technology here at home. We are seeing strong interest from urologists and clinics across Europe. Within days of receiving the CE marking, we had both our first customers and our first patients undergoing biopsies with our needle. We are very much looking forward to the next phase,” says Andreas Forsvall, physician, founder and CEO of Xaga Surgical.
Xaga Surgical participates in SmiLe Venture Hub’s Incubator Programme.
“With founder Andreas Forsvall, who is also a physician, Xaga Surgical combines extensive clinical experience with a deep understanding of the limitations of conventional biopsy needles. He also has a valuable network of physicians who have a need for the technology in clinical practice,” says Kushagr Punyani, CBO at SmiLe Venture Hub.
